All veteran does is slightly increase difficulty and give you a slightly better chance to drop rare and epic items.
Go for it if you want a little bit of extra challenge. There is nothing wrong with playing on normal on your initial playthrough though.
But there are more heroes in veteran. I guess that is the source of "better" drops. Difficulty is a bit higher though.
